Current Season

The 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was the 16th edition of this T20 cricket competition. It took place between October 16th and November 6th, 2023, and hold 5 groups and 38 teams with Punjab beating Baroda to win the champion.

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, a Twenty20 tournament played in India, saw its fifteenth edition in 2022–2023. It began on October 11, 2022, and ended on November 5, 2022. The competition was a part of the domestic cricket season in India for 2022–2023 which the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced in August 2022. The reigning champions were Tamil Nadu.

Eight teams each played in Groups A, B, & C, while seven teams competed in Groups D and E of the tournament. The teams that finished second in each group and third with the best record overall after the 5 groups qualified for the preliminary quarterfinals, while the group winners advanced straight to the quarterfinals. The competition was held in six different locations throughout the nation; the group stage was held in Indore, Jaipur, Rajkot, Mohali, and Lucknow, while the knockout rounds were held in Kolkata. Hrithik Shokeen of Delhi was the first impact player to be used after the impact player rule was introduced on October 11 when he took Hiten Dalal's place in their match against Manipur. Mumbai won the championship by defeating Himachal Pradesh by a margin of four wickets in the final.

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy has historically, and up until this 2022–2023 edition of the competition, been scheduled to take place considerably later in the Indian cricket season, following the conclusion of the long and exciting Ranji trophy season. But, this year's competition was moved forward to take place before the IPL (Indian Premier League) auction, which typically happens in December or January. The goal of the auction is to sign cricket players for the IPL franchises, which is the most significant game in the Indian cricket season.

Previous Seasons

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, formerly known as the "Inter-State T20 Championship," is a yearly T20 tournament held in India. It was reintroduced as the "Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy" three years later. 27 teams battled for the T20 title in the tournament's debut season back in 2006–07, but by 2022, 38 domestic teams who participate in the Ranji Trophy will also fight for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

The BCCI experimented with the tournament's structure frequently throughout the years, even switching it to an inter-zonal event in 2016. It was later introduced once again in the previous format, with domestic teams competing for the championship. Under the current structure, there are six groups made up of 38 teams, one of which is a plate group with eight teams while the other five groups each have six teams. Each team in the competition, including the plate group, will play five matches.

With three championship victories, Tamil Nadu is the most dominant team in the history of this competition. They were the first team to successfully defend their championship after winning the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in its inaugural year. They went on to win it twice more, in 2018-19 and 2019-20. It is interesting to note that Mumbai, the most successful domestic side in Indian cricket, did not go to the finals until the 2022–23 season. The current Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, played for the team in the first game as an 18-year-old and went on to record the nation's maiden T20 century.

Mumbai finally took home the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on November 5, 2022, by defeating Himachal Pradesh in the championship match, ending an almost two-decade-long wait. Karnataka, Gujarat, and Baroda each won the competition twice, while Tamil Nadu won it three times.

The winners of previous seasons are (2006-07) Tamil Nadu, (2009-10) Maharashtra, (2010-11) Bengal, (2011-12) Baroda, (2012-13) Gujarat, (2013/14) Baroda, (2014-15) Gujarat, (2015-16) Uttar Pradesh, (2016-17) East Zone, (2017-18) Delhi, (2018-19) Karnataka, (2019-20) Karnataka, (2020-21) Tamil Nadu, (2021-22) Tamil Nadu, and (2022-23) Mumbai.

History & Structure

The Inter-State T20 Championship was the original name of the BCCI's main domestic T-20 event, which was changed and reintroduced as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. It consisted of 27 Ranji teams divided into five Zones. In the first SMAT Trophy, Rohit Sharma recorded the first T20 century by an Indian while chasing a total of 140+ vs Gujarat. He did it for Mumbai in the very next game after scoring 40+ not out in the previous game.

Each Zone's champion and runner-up advance to the elimination round. The knockout phase was replaced by a Super League in the 2012–13 season, where the champions and runners-up from each Zone are divided into 2 groups and also the winner advances to the final. The BCCI stated in June 2016 that a zonal-based tournament will take the place of the championship. The BCCI returned to including all domestic teams the very next season.

The zonal system was eliminated after nine additional clubs were added to the domestic league for the 2018–19 season, and teams are now split into five (5) groups with the champions and runners-up advancing to the Super League. The Super League group winners compete in the Final after the 10 clubs are split into two groups.

The Twenty20 cricket competition (also known as Twenty-20 or T20) was first played in 2003 to establish a quick-paced style of cricket. In a Twenty20 cricket match, each of the two competing teams is allowed a single inning with a maximum of 20 overs. Meaning that a normal match lasts around three hours, with an interval of ten minutes between each inning of roughly ninety minutes. The ICC recognizes First-class and List-A cricket as the two highest domestic or international forms of cricket, although Twenty20 cricket is considered one of the tops despite being a very brief game.

The inter-state T20 championship, which was played by the 27 teams competing in the Ranji Trophy competition using the state format introduced that year, was first given by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) two years before to the tournament's 2008–2009 debut. The BCCI decided to increase the number of teams competing in the Ranji Trophy event to 38 for the 15th edition of the trophy — the 2022–2023 season – thus affecting Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Yet there was no real change in the organization. Five groups made up of all the teams, three of which have seven teams each, and the other two containing eight teams, are formed. The leading two teams in each group proceed to the next stage, and games within each group are played in a round-robin system (similar to a league where every other team plays against every other team). Each group in the second stage, which consists of two groups of five (5) teams each, was contested like a super league. The winning side from each group advances to the final, where they will face off in a traditional T20 match of Indian cricket.
